Since the launch of the original Digibox in 1998 the Sky box has been the most popular digital set-top box in the UK. It’s been through several versions – the Sky+ Box, a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) with varying sizes of memory added for recording programmes and the Sky+HD Box, which first emerged in 2006. In January 2010 Sky took the decision to discontinue the Sky+ Box and limit the original box to Multiroom upgrades, leaving the Sky+HD Box as the standard issue with all new contracts – you can then choose whether to subscribe to the HD channel package for an extra £10.25 per month.
The Sky+HD Box now comes with all new contracts and it enables you to use the Sky+ service – with this you can record programmes and pause and rewind live TV, as well as setting the box to record an entire series and other great features. The box has enough memory to record up to 80 hours of regular TV or 30 hours of HD TV, and features an HDMI HD TV output (among the many connections on the back) which, together with an HD ready TV and the HD Pack for an extra £10.25 per month, is all you need to go ‘HD’. Let’s take a closer look at the box itself…
The picture above shows the controls and indicator lights on the front of the HD box and below you can see the connections on the rear…
What can you do with the Sky+HD Box? Pretty much everything you could want including
- Pause and rewind live TV
- Record up to 80 hours of TV or 30 hours of HD TV
- Record a whole series with one command using Series Link
- Record one channel while watching another
- Record 2 channels while watching a recorded programme
- Use the on-screen programme guide to select what you want to record

You can read more about the HD channels available on the Sky HD page.
Sky+HD 1TB Box
For those who want a serious amount of storage there is a 1 terabyte (1TB) version of the Sky+HD box which gives you 4 times the hard disc space of the regular box. The Sky+HD box has a memory of 500GB, of which 250GB is reserved for the on-demand service Sky Anytime and the other 250GB is available for you to record on. The 1TB version of the box has 1TB of space for personal recording as well as another 500GB reserved for Sky Anytime – a truly massive memory capacity of 1.5TB. That’s enough space for up to 240 hours of HD TV in the 1TB for personal use and up to 100 hours of HD on-demand content from Sky Anytime.
New and existing Sky+HD customers alike are entitled to one 1TB box for £149, additional boxes £249. Sky TV customers taking their first HD package or Sky+HD customers adding Sky Multiroom can get the box for only £49.
